PROVIDING COMFORT THROUGH INNOVATIVE DESIGN
By Glenn Johnson, director, The Design Studio, B/E Aerospace

"People were not designed to sit!" These were the words of my maverick ergonomics lecturer, Fred Hoyland. But you don't have to take Fred's word for it—just observe people as you wander around the High Point Market in the coming week. Spot someone sitting on a ledge, on a stool or a chair and you might see them waggle their legs, tilt the chair forward and backward or slump. If you were ever scolded at school for lolling in your chair, or find yourself as an adult unable to sit still in a meeting, it might not come as news to you that shiftiness often has more to do with body design than poor behavior!

The High Point Market Showroom Display and Merchandising Ideas Competition—designed to celebrate the extraordinary showroom presentations you create each and every season—is already well underway. All companies exhibiting at the Fall 2007 High Point Market are eligible and invited to enter the competition. But you must act quickly:

Entries will only be accepted until
9 a.m., Monday morning, October 1, 2007.

Showroom displays will be judged on visual appeal, creativity, elements and principles of design presentation, each display's ability to be replicated efficiently and affordably on retail floors and consumer allure. Find competition details, rules and instructions for submissions at the following web address: www.highpointmarket.org/fall07competition.

SUSTAINABLE CHOICES GO MAINSTREAM
By Jessica Koster, product manager, BiOH

At the High Point Market next week, the word on everybody's lips will most likely be "green." Clearly, the green trend is red-hot and signs are everywhere that environmental awareness is taking root in the mainstream.

In the marketplace, countless companies are making steps towards more sustainable practices and offering greener options for consumers. These same companies (and the earth) are reaping the rewards from socially responsible consumers who want to leave a smaller environmental footprint.

"We started as an interior design firm in 1983 and opened our store in 2003. The supplier relationships that we developed in High Point over the years were essential to our successful expansion into retail. Today, the High Point Market is still the one place we go to see everything. All of our vendors are there, showing their entire lines, which gives us an opportunity to see, feel and experience the pieces that we'll be purchasing for our clients and our store. We can also catch up with all of the latest trends, seek out new suppliers and build new relationships. With everything we need all in one place, the High Point Market really is the one place where we can accomplish the most."
