Mark Badgley and James Mischka guide their brand of glamour and elegance to interiors
As fashion, furnishings and home entertaining converge and fuel personal expression, a curatorial approach to decorating is also gaining traction. The Badgley Mischka Home collection, which returns to High Point Market Oct. 14-18, is in front of these intersecting trends
“Fashion, home, entertainment … it’s all becoming one, because they relate to one another so well,” says Badgley, whose fashion label with Mischka celebrates its 30-year anniversary next year. “Even though James and I designed the collections as rooms, we know the customer is shopping for furniture like she’s shopping for her clothing: She’s not necessarily buying a whole room, she’s buying a piece that gives her room a fresh start.”
In response, Badgley Mischka Home is rich with glamorous conversation-starters and stand-alone pieces that can stimulate incremental sales between big-ticket residential projects. “We want interior designers to look to us for this need,” Mischka concludes.
The duo’s eight collections range in styles from a Spanish-influenced homage to 1900s-era California, the Capistrano Collection, to a glamorous and artisanal suite called Astaire. At fall High Point Market attendees will be able to shop selections from all eight collections, as well as see new colorations and finishes, according to Mischka.
“The design harkens back to art I had in the 1970s in my home, which is why I like it so much,” James Mischka says of the Astaire Credenza, his favorite piece.
“The groups have such variety within them,” Mischka says. “One is for a beach house, one is for a loft, one is for a house in Grosse Point, MI, perhaps. There’s a beautiful dining set for a family’s second home in Aspen, CO. And there’s a price range – some items sell for $100 and there are aspirational pieces that are priced $10,000.”
Mark Badgley’s favorite silhouette is “very handsome and glamorous,” he says, “and the lines are sensuous. It looks beautiful in an old manor home. And it looks amazing in a white box. It’s really a stunning shape.”
Metal finishes, especially gold tones, antique silver and rose gold, connect the eight collections.
“The finishes are key, and that’s why we fell in love with the amazing, fabulous factory in Mexico that manufacturers the line,” Badgley explains. “They have a very artisanal approach. The furniture is all hand-cut, hand-applied finishes and gilded by hand.”
Capistrano credenza features a wood finish combination of hand-glossed Oyster Grey, Toasted Coconut and Onyx Black.
Badgley and Mischka are known for creating glamorous gowns that dazzle on the red carpets of entertainment awards shows. Their transition from gowns to homes has been somewhat seamless, especially as it pertains to motif and form. Sequins and crystals, for instance, are imagined in metal and glass. The iconic falling squares in the Balboa and Monterey furniture groups replicates an embroidery pattern from a recent gown.
It’s design dexterity and business savvy that follows years of designing apparel and accessories that both stun on the red carpet and awaken the dreams of a prom-bound teen.
The 60-inch-wide Casablanca bed bench features hand-gilded wood and a timeless animal print.
“We’ve been in the dressing rooms with our customer a million times these past 30 years and at trunk shows at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman,” Badgley explains. “We know how she likes to dress, and we know what her homes look like, so we approached the furniture how we approach designing our clothing.
“At the end of day, our evening gowns and our furniture are collector pieces,” Badgley continues. “But they are not precious, and a woman can see herself living with our furniture, just as she sees a comfort with our apparel and evening clothes.”
