Why You Simply Must Make It To Market

The benefits of coming to High Point go well beyond the world’s greatest product selection

by Gail Doby, Business Transformation Coach

It’s never an easy decision to take time away from your business. You have to feel sure the investment you make in time and expenses will be worth it. I have been attending High Point Market for many years, and I can honestly say I have never been disappointed. What I come away with has more than compensated me by improving my business as well as my design work.

It’s a one-stop shop

We all need time now and then to get out of our routine, soak up some inspiration and replenish our creative juices. In addition to learning about new products and suppliers, High Point is a great place to pick up fresh ideas, get caught up on the latest trends, and find out what other designers are doing and thinking. I don’t know of another show where residential designers can see and experience so much in one place.

Beyond the products and inspirations, High Point provides an excellent opportunity to build and strengthen your vendor relationships – new ones as well as your regulars. Vendors are a great source of information about what is happening in their product category and what items are popular with other designers. This is the time to ask about pricing, inventories, lead times, special orders, shipping and delivery, and all the other details that can make the difference between getting that item you want when you want it or trying to chase it down later with a deadline looming. While you have their attention, negotiate for special buying arrangements and discounts that will give you an extra margin of profit.

Find products for specific projects

With more than 2,000 exhibitors and tens of thousands of new products on display, High Point Market is an ideal place to shop for the projects you have on the boards or coming up. Although located in the heart of the U.S. residential furniture and furnishings industries, High Point attracts vendors and suppliers from more than 100 countries worldwide. If you only have time to attend one trade show, this is the one to pick.

Build your knowledge base - and your network

And if those aren’t reasons enough, while you’re there you can take advantage of the educational and professional development events taking place every day. Leading experts and designers cover a wide range of topics, from trends and designing tips to ways to improve your business operations, enhance your marketing, and boost your revenues. A number of sessions earn credit toward your association or state’s CEU requirement.

For me, one of the greatest pleasures of attending High Point is the opportunity to network with other designers and industry experts, and especially to catch up with friends and business associates. Those of us who are solopreneurs or run small firms have few occasions to gather with our peers, reconnect, and swap war stories. Yet, it is such an important part of feeling that we are part of a professional community.

Don't miss out. You and your business will be glad you came.
