Only a short distance from the residential furniture capital of the world, Appalachian State University has a proud history and has been serving the furniture industry for over 70 years. The Industrial Design curriculum offers students a design-based education that emphasizes hands-on skills, research, aesthetics, presentation, critical thinking, and professional development. Through industry collaboration, required internships, and personal exploration, students develop the necessary skills to be competitive in today's market. In addition to furniture studio classes, the Furniture Concentration includes foundation courses in design drawing, materials & processes, computer-assisted drafting (CAD), and industrial design. Recent accolades by furniture majors include, ISFD Pinnacle award winners, Bienenstock design competition winners, With-It scholarships, IFDA scholarships, IWF Design Emphasis category winners, and Cliff Young Design Competition placement.
